Hatch Beauchamp C of E Primary School offers a broad and balanced curriculum that focuses on quality core subject teaching, whilst offering enrichment and fun through exciting innovations such as our Keeping It Real Days. This provides fortnightly opportunities for our children to apply their learning to real and practical problems based around our outdoor environment. To date, such activities have included creating scaled drawings of our labyrinth, researching plant types and calculating the quantity of plants needed and the total cost of buying them as well as writing letters to local garden centres asking for donations and sponsorship.
In English, we use the Read Write Inc. programme for a systematic and dynamic approach to teaching phonics and reading in KS1, extending provision into KS2 as necessary. Good spelling is supported through No Nonsense Spelling and quality writing is achieved through the Talk for Writing approach.
Mathematical skills are taught through a variety of methods and mediums, including web-based practice using iXL.com, Hegarty Maths, Times Tables Rock Stars and Numeracy Ninjas. This year, alongside our Trust partners, we are using the Singapore-style approach to support our teaching of these skills, supported through Maths No Problem.
All other National Curriculum subjects are taught through our themes in a practical and purposeful way. Children are encouraged to make links between subject areas, whilst applying their core skills of Maths, Reading and Writing.
Each week the children work with our sports coach to partake in a range of activities and games that help build core problem-solving, team-work and leadership skills through gym, dance and team sports. Our sports coach also supports children who may require additional help developing their physical skills.
